Indirect Costs
Items which do not appear on your bill but are still a cost associated with being a student are considered indirect costs. These costs include room and board (if you live off campus), books and supplies, travel and miscellaneous educational expenses.
Room and Board
If you live off campus, you will still have the cost of room and board, it just won’t be an item on your bill. The cost for housing and meals will vary depending on individual situations.
Books and Supplies
We estimate book and supply costs to be approximately $1,000 per year although book costs and supplies will vary based on the student’s course load and will vary from semester to semester. Supplies are considered anything that is necessary to complete course work such as paper, notebooks, pens, calculators, etc.
Travel and Miscellaneous Educational Expenses
This category includes average expenses for necessary trips home when school is not in session, as well as laundry, clothes, medical and other personal expenses. Actual costs vary depending on each student’s needs and lifestyle.
Loan Fees
Some loans have fees attached to them which students should be aware of. Specific fee rates depend on the loan being taken. Please see specific loan information for actual loan fees.
The Budget
The University of Maine System uses calculations of both the direct costs and the indirect costs to come up with an annual budget for students based on what the average student will incur for costs over the academic year. The budget is calculated using an estimation of 30 credit-hours per year for undergraduate students and 18 credit-hours per year for graduate students.
