Media Boards - Meeting Minutes: November 12, 2008

Present: Gus Burkett (CASE), Robert Dana (Student Affairs), Jacob Davis (Maine Channel), Serge Drage (Information Technologies), Andrea Gifford (Student Affairs), Sunny Hughes (Communication and Journalism), Mike Murphy (WMEB), David Nickerson (Maine Channel), and Kenda Scheele (Student Affairs).

Meeting began at 4:00 p.m. in Room 315 Memorial Union. Dr. Robert Dana, Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students, relayed to the group that he was the President’s designee and had appointed them to the Broadcast Media Board as prescribed in the Student Handbook. All University of Maine student broadcast media are governed by and accountable to the Broadcast Media Board. The Broadcast Media Board is established and chartered in full recognition of, and with respect for, the legal and educational responsibilities and proprietary interests of the University, and for the long-honored principle of an editorially independent campus press and broadcast media.

Dr. Dana discussed the role of the board, emphasizing that the board was largely to assure good and proper fiscal practices and to provide guidance and support. The membership fully concurred. Kenda Scheele, Sr. Associate Dean of Students was designated as the chair of the board and would be responsible for scheduling future meetings and keeping Vice President Dana abreast of the board’s meetings and activities. Kenda Scheele indicated that she would contact the board early in the Spring 2009 semester to schedule the next meeting which would likely be in February.

It was discussed and agreed that Gus Burkett would meet with students from the Maine Channel to help them develop their constitution and other organization papers before the next board meeting. A brief discussion about the possibility of merging the Broadcast Media Board and the Student Publications Board into one Student Media Board was discussed. However, it was decided that this idea was premature and two separate boards made more practical sense for the time being. It was suggested that the board consider applying for a Center for Teaching Excellent grant. This was tabled with more discussion for the next board meeting. Finally, the distribution of activity and communication fee funds to the various student broadcast media groups was identified

Meeting adjourned at 5:20 p.m.
