MProject - First Year Students
Outcomes for First Year Students:
- Students will have the ability to seek-out and connect with extra-curricular activities and/or opportunities that meet their specific interests.
- Have the confidence to exercise their ability to engage any University academic and/or academic support unit to receive services.
- Learn the University traditions.
- Contribute the University community.
- Have someone to go to or email with questions they may have about anything at UMaine, so they will never be unknowing as a first-year student.
- Be able to get the most out of their first year experience which will continue throughout their college career.

Who Participates and What Does It Entail?
All first year students will have access to a team of M Project Guides. Guides are second, third, and fourth year students who have made the transition to the University of Maine and want to see every new student be successful! Teams are assigned to each First Year Residential Experience (FYRE) Hall and will be present in the halls for programming and support purposes. M Project Guides are available to answer questions in person or via e-mail. Some Guides make use of Facebook and may be found by following the links from the University of Maine Class of 2013.
M Project Guides, The Office of First and Second Year Programs, and Residence Life partner to provide notebooks for each First Year student. The notebooks include important information such as campus maps and phone numbers for offices on campus.
M Project Guides will check in with their students in person while they are in the halls and via e-mail. M Project is active the entire year to ensure that classes are going well and to remind students of important dates and deadlines. Guides will also let their students know when they will be running programs for their halls and what events are going on around campus.
The Guides are there to serve as their connection to the campus just by keeping them connected with important things that every first-year student should know about or be reminded about, and guide them through questions they have about life at UMaine.
Programming run by M Project Guides is meant to meet student needs. Programs run in the past include:
- Study sessions
- Movie Nights
- Game Nights (board games and video games)
- Door to Door (meet & greets, snack patrol, prize patrol)
- Tabling in the FYRE hall lobbies
