Center for Teaching Excellence

Peer Consulting

Peer Consulting Program
Your Teaching,
Your Peers,
Your Consultants

The Center for Teaching Excellence offers faculty and continuing contract instructors at the University of Maine the opportunity for collaborative exploration of their teaching.

The Peer Consulting Program is:

  • a confidential and voluntary service
  • an exploration of teaching done in a collaborative, collegial manner
  • available to those faculty who would like to gather information from an independent, non-judgmental source about aspects of their teaching
  • a method of obtaining and using feedback in a positive, meaningful, and useful manner
  • an opportunity to meet colleagues who, like you, value good teaching.

WHO ARE THE PEER CONSULTANTS?

Click on the blue subheading (above), "Who Are the Peer Consultants?" to see a list of consultants with short biographies and information about their areas of interest and expertise.

The Peer Consultants are:

  • experienced teachers who are supportive, nonjudgmental colleagues
  • work under the umbrella of the Center for Teaching Excellence
  • engage in a multi-part process of assessment of teaching for the development of the individual teacher. Peer consultation is not an assessment of course content, nor is it an evaluative process.
  • may engage multiple methods of information gathering, including but not limited to review of teaching materials, classroom observations, and analysis of student evaluations. Methods are determined solely by the client.

-- All consultations engaged through the Peer Consultation Program are confidential.

-- Peer consultation is driven by the client.

-- If requested by the client, Peer Consultants will write a confidential, summary memo at the end of the consultation process addressed to the client only.

-- Information on consultations is collected by the Center for Teaching Excellence but is not shared with the client's department/unit. At the conclusion of the consultation process, memos, notes, and any other materials in the possession of the Peer Consultant must either be returned to the client or destroyed.

-- The Center for Teaching Excellence is a resource for consultants and clients alike. The Center provides training, development, resources, and referrals for Peer Consultants.

To arrange for a Peer Consultation, contact the Center for Teaching Excellence, 581-3472 or Email CTE@umit.maine.edu
