Crossland Hall
Dedicated:
Dec. 1880. Occupied: 1920. Originally part of the Goddard Farm and
known as the Frost House, it was built in 1863 and is recognized
as the oldest building on campus. It was the home of Dr. Merritt
C. Fernald, the 2nd president of the university. It later served
as a house for Beta Theta Pi and Sigma Nu fraternities. Renamed
North Hall, it was moved to its present location shortly after the
turn of the century. The School of Home Economics used it until
1939 when it was converted into a men's dormitory. From 1946 to
1969 it served as the infirmary. In 1969, the UMaine Board of
Trustees dedicated it as the "Alumni Center." In 1980, it was
renamed the Crossland Alumni Center to honor former acting
university president, Charles E. Crossland who served the
University as an administrator from the 1920's to the 1970's. With
the dedication of the Buchanan Alumni House in 2002, the Alumni
Association moved to new quarters. Today Crossland hall houses the
Center for Teaching Excellence and the Franco-American Center.
