Upward Bound Math Science (UBMS) is a federally (Department of Education) funded program, assisting qualified students to improve their skills in high school as they prepare to for college. Upward Bound students qualify economically, and plan to be the first generation within their immediate families to attend and complete college. The program is affiliated with the University of Maine College of Education and Human Development.
The Math Science Program specifically targets students who are interested in pursuing STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) college majors and career fields, and who are looking for new, challenging academic opportunities not offered in their schools. A year round program, UBMS includes academic and summer opportunities. Academic Counselors meet with students at their high schools for academic services September through May, and in turn students spend six intensive weeks during June and July on the University of Maine’s Orono campus for our summer program.
UBMS serves approximately 63-69 freshman, sophomores, juniors and seniors attending Maine high schools in Penobscot, Piscataquis, Hancock, Cumberland, Oxford and Waldo counties.
