A Food Safety Program for Quantity Cooks

Many organizations and community groups rely on volunteers for a variety of food events for fundraising. But cooking for a crowd is tricky!

How do you store all the purchased food?

When is the food completely cooked?

How long can you leave food on the buffet table?

What do you do with the leftovers?

You “cook for a crowd” if you volunteer to prepare, serve or handle food at a:

  • Banquet
  • Church supper
  • Pancake breakfast
  • Family reunion picnic
  • Pig roast
  • Community food kitchen
  • Fair booth
  • Festival
  • Bean hole bean supper

Why should I attend a workshop?

There’s a lot to learn about safe food preparation and handling. If you don’t do it for a living, you may not be aware of all the special techniques involved in cooking for a large group. It’s scary to think about getting sick from your meal, but it can happen.

Foodborne illness strikes Americans more than 12 million times a year. More than three-quarters of the outbreaks are blamed on food eaten outside the home. While foodborne illness can be mild as a stomachache, it can be much more serious and sometimes fatal. Children and the elderly are among those most at risk.

Unsafe food can “spoil” your group’s reputation and its finances. That pancake breakfast you counted on to fund your group’s charity work will have to be canceled. And you may even be sued. Don’t take a chance. Learn to protect yourself and the people you feed.

What will I learn?

This two-part workshop will cover the following food safety concerns:

  • Planning and Purchasing
  • Storing Food Supplies
  • Preparing and Cooking Food
  • Transporting, Storing and Serving Cooked Food
  • Handling Leftovers

You will receive a packet of resources for later use.
