The Maine Highlands Farmers
Meets the fourth Wednesday of the month at 7 pm in Dover-Foxcroft. Usually at the Extension Office at 165 East Main St.
There was no established farm marketing organization in the Piscataquis region of Maine, and a group of farmers have established a group to try to enhance their farm marketing options. To learn more about consumer preferences for local farm products they received a grant from the Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program.
They conducted a market analysis, assessed the development of a marketing group, and enhanced their current marketing efforts by producing a map of ecotourism destinations and local farm stands. They also established a web presence and offer member farmers an opportunity to have a farm web site.
They have also been successful with several small grants to provide food from member farmers to the local food cupboards.
The University of Maine Cooperative Extension and the University of Maine Department of Resource Economics and Policy Development are assisting the farmer group with the consumer survey.
