Elderhostel Volunteer Host
Application Form | Elderhostel Schedule

As a volunteer host for Tanglewood’s Elderhostel programs, you will meet adults 55+ years of age from across the country while you share your group leadership skills and knowledge of the local area. You will also learn more about Maine’s cultural and natural history, make new friends, and have fun.

Responsibilities:

  • Create the necessary atmosphere for a positive Elderhostel experience.
  • Help carry out program activities: check-in, orientation, opening and closing ceremonies.
  • Lead/assist in managing a group of adults from one activity to another.
  • Relay directions to new bus drivers.
  • Introduce instructors and other local experts to participants.
  • Stay with participants at hotel throughout their stay. 
  • Role model healthy, positive energy and communication.
  • Serve as a listener and/or problem solver for minor participant needs.
  • Maintain frequent communication with program coordinator.
  • Represent Tanglewood 4H Camp/University of Maine Cooperative Extension.
  • Participate in miscellaneous duties as required.

Qualifications:

  • Alert, energetic, flexible, adaptable, creative, enthusiastic team player.
  • Appreciate the natural world as well as the cultural history of mid-coast Maine and/or beyond.
  • Knowledge, skills, or personality to enhance program.
  • Previous experience engaging with well-educated, mature adults.
  • Former participant of Elderhostel programs (or willingness to train).
  • Ability to lead/manage groups indoors, and outdoors over various terrain.
  • First aid and CPR certification (or willingness to attend training and acquire certification).

Compensation: Volunteer position includes program participation, all meals and lodging. 

Dates: Various program dates of 3 to 6 days in duration from mid-May to mid-October, 2008.
