Summer Camp Chef

Tanglewood 4-H Camp and Learning Center offers a residential summer camp program for approximately 120 people at its facility within Camden Hills State Park, Lincolnville, Maine. Our mission is to teach Maine youth and adults to be effective and caring citizens of the earth through affordable environmental education and nature based experiences.  We also strive to develop lifelong skills and a sense of community spirit. The Summer Camp Chef is the primary food service manager for Tanglewood, and generally prepares two meals per day. A Camp Cook is hired to prepare one meal per day.

Responsibilities: 

  • Provide overall food service management for the summer camp program
  • Prepare healthy meals for the summer camp, using whole foods and fresh produce
  • Utilize produce from the camp's garden and local growers and strive to develop a local base of food suppliers
  • Safely operate commercial cooking equipment, mixer, slicer, dishwasher and stoves
  • Train, supervise, and work with 1 or 2 assistants in food preparation, serving, and clean up
  • Maintain a clean and sanitary kitchen facility
  • Work with the Camp Cook in menu planning, food ordering, and preparing meals

Qualifications:

  • Prior experience cooking nutritious and wholesome foods for large groups
  • High safety and sanitation standards, ServSafe Certification (or ability to become certified)
  • Experience training and supervising kitchen support staff
  • Attention to detail
  • Flexible, enthusiastic team player
  • Training and/or experience in sanitation, food preparation and protection, hygiene, and record keeping

Preferred: Prior experience working with youth; current First Aid and Basic Life Support; willingness to teach food education to program participants as needed

Compensation:  Negotiable, depending on experience and housing requirements

Dates: June 16 – August 16, 2008
