The first event in Café Miranda’s “For the Kids” fundraiser series was a huge success, drawing hungry folks in to support a great local cause.

The unique Rockland restaurant hosted the benefit brunch Sunday, April 29, raising $600 for Tanglewood 4-H Camp and Learning Center’s financial aid fund. The money raised will support local families and help get Midcoast youth to summer camp.

More than 100 kids take advantage of Tanglewood’s financial aid yearly, a large reason why Tanglewood is one of the state’s most affordable summer camps. A program of the University of Maine’s Cooperative Extension, Tanglewood has been offering affordable nature-based experiences to Maine youth for more than 25 years in Lincolnville and more recently at Blueberry Cove, a seaside, marine-based education camp in Tenants Harbor.

“It was inspiring to see the community participate in this fundraiser that will directly benefit their community,” said Tanglewood Executive Director Brian Robinson. “The number of participants exceeded our expectations, and we can’t thank the friendly staff at Café Miranda enough.”

Café Miranda owner Kerry Altiero said he established the fundraising program to take a proactive approach in giving back to his community. The Tanglewood benefit brunch was the first, and he plans to hold similar events for other local organizations dedicated to enriching the lives of Midcoast Maine’s youth.

“This fundraiser series is intended not only to raise funds, but also the awareness of these various organizations and the work they do for kids in and around Knox County,” said Altiero. “These are the experiences that these kids will remember for the rest of their lives.”

Since 1993, Café Miranda has been serving unique, affordable ethnic and American cuisine at their Oak Street location. Altiero and his faithful crew bake fresh bread in one of the areas first wood-fired brick ovens daily and offer an extensive, oft-changing menu of more than 80 items. Also offered are house made desserts and an extensive beer and wine list.
