Tanglewood Readies Summer Programs
News Articles

LINCOLNVILLE — Summer is often thought of as a time when learning stops and fun begins. At Tanglewood 4-H Camp and Learning Center, a program of the University of Maine Cooperative Extension, fun and learning are present all summer long.

Residential camp at Tanglewood is a unique experience for boys and girls ages 8-14. The week-long, “focus-based” sessions allow each camper to choose their favorite activities. Some focuses include gardening, creative arts, drama, music, outdoor living, global action, watershed exploration, forest life, and group challenge.

One example of this is the gardening focus. These campers learn how to plant and harvest vegetables, identify helpful and harmful garden insects, compost properly, and other gardening basics. The harvested vegetables are brought back to the dining hall and shared with fellow campers at lunch and dinner. Many of these campers go home and plant gardens and help out with grocery shopping.

Tanglewood’s residential camp is located in Lincolnville in the Camden Hills State Park and consists of 940 acres with 14 miles of trails. With 45 rustic buildings, including a dining hall with modern kitchen, nature center, classrooms, sleeping cabins, wash buildings, swim area, and playing fields, Tanglewood has safe, fun, affordable outdoor adventures for every age.

Tanglewood’s discovery trips are 3-6 day trips that take place entirely outdoors and appeal to campers who are looking for a more physically challenging experience. For boys and girls ages 9-15, some trip focuses are outdoor living, Appalachian Trail exploration, and islands and sea exploration. The Leadership Development Program is for campers ages 14-17 and teaches leadership skills through immersive, week-long trips. Younger campers, ages 6-10, can enjoy the week-long day camp sessions at both camps.

Since the Lincolnville camp’s inception in 1982, Tanglewood programs have served an estimated 80,000 Maine residents. Just this past year, Tanglewood received an accreditation from the American Camp Association, an honor bestowed to only the safest and most professional camps.
