A NEWSLETTER FOR HANCOCK COUNTY 4-H PARTICIPANTS

July 2009 Issue

2009 Jamboree

Terry Swazey, Leaders’ Association President and Horse Camp Director, gives the welcome for the opening      ceremony. Then it was on to either goats, sheep or horse tracks. Everyone seemed to be appreciating the good weather. Because of new Blue Hill Fair Association restrictions, the Jamboree committee had to get creative and they rose to the challenge. Jamboree and Horse Camp were combined and seemed to work well. Troy Staples handled the sheep tract while Ruth and Victoria and Destiny handled the goats. Gary Anderson from the   University of Maine was the guest speaker. He had an interesting visual of a cow’s stomach to help the audience understand what happens to the food and why the proper balance of nutrition is so important. The horse folks had two riding lessons with instructor, Sue Arthur and many mini    clinics from their 4-H leaders.  The horse camp stayed an additional night and held a mock horse show on Sunday to get ready for show season and just to have fun.
I enjoy seeing the 4-H youth at work, at play or   helping each other. If there was a “Good 4-H Spirit Award”, I would give it to
Mia, Horse of Course. I witnessed a shy 4-H visitor not knowing where to go. Mia asked if he would like to see the horses and said, “Come on and I’ll show you.” That’s the 4-H spirit, Mia!  Food? Food is mighty important for any 4-H function and the cooks (Bill, Rose, Paula, & Dwight) did a great job. Stephanie Carter and family went for the first time and she summed it up with “This is great.”

NORMA’S NOTES – When a minute passes by, you cannot retrieve it. Time is limited so how about a helpful hint for leaders. As soon as a 4-Her finishes a project, have them fill out the fair card and attach it to the project and put the projects in a box. Set the box aside until fair time. No last minute stress to gather, fill out cards and box it up. Thank you, Brenda Jordan for proving how well that method works.  (Fair cards are at the Extension office.)

CLUB CHAT - Lock, Stock & Barrel -It is always a pleasure to visit this club and see how involved families are.  Awards night was not the final event before closing for the season. They had more lessons for outdoor cooking—steak, sausage, chicken and pork chops with either a rub, glaze or homemade barbeque sauce. YUM! They did their own shopping with a budget and learned how to cut up a chicken to save money. I learned two new cooking terms. Mike says, “Stir it until it looks happy”  and Foster Smith says, “Glump it on” as he pours the homemade sauce on the pork chops. On the left, Joseph looks on and on the right Robin prepares the vegetables for the grill. Thanks for having me. Norwood says he is already being asked when is the first fall meeting. That is a good sign. Have a great summer everyone.   By Norma Hardison, 4-H Program Aide

Another Club Report - The Dragonflies - Club leader Stephanie Carter reports their club has had a busy spring.  Pictures on PDF are from their yard sale, their fishing trip, flower arranging, and Jamboree.

June Meeting
reminder that at the May Leaders’ Meeting a motion was made and passed to skip the June meeting.

Beef Steer Tickets - Don’t forget to pick up your steer tickets.  You may pick them up from Dwight Sargent or at the Extension office.  Each ticket sells for one dollar. Eighty-five cents of that goes to the Leaders’ Association to help defray the cost of County events,  scholarships, and many other projects. The club decides how the remaining 15 cents is distributed.  The individual selling the most tickets receives a nice plaque and the club selling the most receives $50.00. So get your tickets NOW and SELL - SELL - SELL!

Steer Tickets and Cloverbuds - As long as Cloverbuds are not handling the money and are under the  direct supervision of an older youth or adult, they can participate in club or countywide fundraising activities.  Also remember that we cannot sell raffle tickets to people under 16.  Adults should not put kids names on the tickets.

Food Booth Sign Up - It’s that time of year again! We need  volunteers to work at the 4-H Food Booth during the fair. Barbara Hopkins, Methel and Joey Wilbur are scheduling 4-H leaders, parents, and teens. We encourage everyone to do their part and help out for a few hours.  Call Barbara at 469-7142 or Methel and Joey  today at 565-2308 to pick your preferred time and date.

Blue Hill Fair Reminders - While planning for the 4-H exhibits (club and  individual) please refer to the guidelines in the fair book. (We have attached the Exhibit Hall rules for your convenience.) All questions regarding the 4-H Exhibit Hall should be      directed to Methel Wilbur at 565-2308.  Please call at least 2 weeks before the fair.  All exhibits must be checked in on Tues., Sept. 1st between 3 and 7 pm.  Due to limited space in the hall, leaders are encouraged to bring the exhibits with completed  paperwork.

Something New at Blue Hill Fair -  It is going to require a lot of cooperation from  4-H but it should be an exciting way to “show case” some of the wonderful things you do in 4-H. There will be a tent beside the 4-H Exhibit Hall (Eckenroad 4-H Building). As the mini chart (shown in the PDF), there will be opportunities to demonstrate 4-H activities by just showing or by involving the audience. If you are willing to take one or more one hour slots,  please call Methel Wilbur at 565-2308 or Norma Hardison home 584-3754 or Joyce at the Ext. Office 667-8212 to let them know what and when. Get creative with your ideas.

12. Eastern States Bus Trip October 3, 2009
It’s time to reserve seats for the buses traveling to Eastern States Exposition (ESE or also called the “Big E”) in West Springfield, Massachusetts for Maine Day on Saturday, October 3, 2009.  This one-day trip is sponsored by the Maine Trustees of the Eastern States Exposition to encourage Maine 4-Hers who don’t presently participate in events at ESE to see the activities that go on for 4-H youth in hopes to bolster their enthusiasm to participate in the future.  Two buses are reserved for us and the northernmost bus will originate in Bangor and they will stop at several points on I-95.  Seats fill up quickly, and we will begin taking registrations on     Monday, August 10, 2009.

All  youth must go with a chaperone, but sine this event is primarily for youth; seats are limited to no more than two adults per child.  The bus ride and admission to the “Big E” are free, but all individuals on this trip are expected to march in the parade at 5 pm.  It works well if you wear a 4-H tee shirt if you have one and for clubs to bring their club banner to display during the parade.

Items you might want to bring along with you are: light snacks, water, a good book, Rated G movies (there is a DVD/VCR on the bus), a pillow, and a blanket.  There will be rest stops along the way.  Other items to consider bringing: clothing to identify your club, a comfortable pair of walking shoes, a hat with a visor, sun glasses, sun screen, a back pack, personal spending money, a camera, and a watch.  If you have a cell phone, it will be helpful for logistics.  Please include your cell phone number when you register.

Please leave valuable items at home.  We will not be responsible for lost or stolen items.  Bus stops will be  determined based on location of riders.  Reservations must be made in writing or by e-mail to: Jessy Brainerd 103 Libby Hall University of Maine Orono, ME  04469-5741 jbrainerd@umext.maine.eduWhen you register, please give your name, address, home phone and cell phone number if you have one.  Please give the names of all the people in your group and indicate if they are a child or adult.  Reservations are due by Friday, September 4, 2009.  A confirmation letter will be sent to you two weeks before the trip giving you the time and pick up location.  Pick up will be bright and early in the morning, but the return trip will be staggered.  One bus will leave right after the parade; the second bus will leave after the evening events.  So when you register, let us know if you’d like to return on the early or late bus.

For questions, you may contact Jessy Brainerd or Michaele Bailey at 800-287-0274 or 581-3877

Norma on the Look Out - Horse & Rider Club
“I pledge my head to clearer thinking, my heart to greater loyalty, my hands to larger service. . .”  We say this pledge every time we hold a club meeting, but do we really believe what we are saying?  At least two of my club members “get it”! Recently, I have had to cancel two of our regularly scheduled meetings  because of personal “emergencies”—the first when both of my elderly parents were seriously ill and the second when my basement flooded last Saturday.  Both times, while making the calls to my clubbers advising them I had to cancel, two of them asked if they could come to do my barn chores for me. How could I refuse such a generous   offer?  It was so nice to know that I wouldn’t have to even think about working that into the already hectic situations I was dealing with.  On both occasions they arrived at my house and went directly to work, grooming horses and donkeys, mucking out stalls and tidying up the barn (they even swept down the cobwebs)!  By the time they had finished, everything was totally shipshape (or should I say “barnshape”). I’d like to think that I taught them how to do this project (and to do it well), but the truth is, I know it’s more to do with how they have been raised. You see, I only have them with me for four hours each month; their parents have them much more than that. So, Mom and Dad, congratulations—so far, so good! And thank you for allowing me to have a part in training them to do a job and to do it well!  So, the next time you are reciting the 4-H pledge, think about the words you are repeating, and when you get the  opportunity, do the right thing, like Jackson and Justine Alexander did!  Thanks Guys! Love You Both!                                      Submitted by Heather Linnehan, Horse & Rider Club leader

Cooking With the Kids

Patriotic Pops

2 cups blue Powerade, Gatorade, or Kool-Aid
             12 5-ounze disposable cups
             1 cup frozen whipped topping
             1 cup vanilla yogurt
             12 craft sticks
             2 cusp cran-raspberry juice

To make the pops, equally divide the blue juice among the plastic cups, then place the cups in the freezer until the juice is partially frozen, about 30-45 minutes.  Mix together the whipped topping and yogurt and divide this mixture among the cups.  Set a craft stick in the center of each pop and return the cups to the freezer for      approximately 45 minutes.  For the final layer, add the cran-raspberry juice to the cups and placed them in the freezer until solid.  To remove the pops, run warm water over the outside of each cup.
