Honorary Page at the State House
My name is
Amberosity and this March I represented Hancock County 4-H as a honorary page
at the Maine State House. A honorary page is a student who helps out in the
House of Representatives or the Senate. They take notes to the Representatives
or the Senators, hand out information about the bills and learn first hand about
how our government works. This year I was chosen to work in the Senate Chamber.
It was scary at first but the Chamber Staff and the Senators were all very
nice.
The Honorable Senator Damon was kind enough to take the time to speak and have
pictures taken with me. He also presented me with his Senate Pin, which I was
very honored to receive. I was also allowed to bang the Senate gavel during a
recess. After my mother and I had lunch in the State cafeteria we decided to
peek in on the House Of Representatives. We were again surprised by how willing
our Representative was, to take the time to speak with us, even though he had a
very busy schedule since they were deciding on the State Budget for the year.
Honorable Representative Koffman was waiting to give a speech before the whole
House Of Representatives, but he invited us to an area under the public viewing
balcony that he referred to as "Behind the Glass." He also sat down with us and
explained what was happening in the House at that time, and how the House
worked. We were eager to hear his speech and soon found that the House of
Representatives runs on their own time. A few minutes of waiting turned to
three hours as Rep. Koffman's speech kept getting bumped. My mother and I were
happy that we stayed though. He proved to be a very good speaker.
I learned how our government works and how stressful a Senators and
Representatives job is. They not only have to participate in many committee
meetings but also have to keep on top of what is happening in the Senate and
House. This adventure has encouraged me to take an active part in our state
government. I believe that many of Hancock Counties 4-Hers would enjoy being an
honorary page and I encourage them to apply next year. This is an opportunity
that shouldn't be missed.

NORMA’S NOTES: Sometimes I am accused of being a “pack rat.” I come by it honestly as my mother was worse than I am. BUT when we wanted something, who did we go to? Mom, of course. I am finding the same thing happens and when someone wants a “piece of history” they quite often ask me. With different educators over the years going through the files and throwing out what might be “history,” we don’t always have good records of some of the special awards such as Razor Crossman and names for the plaques in the Livestock office at Blue Hill Fair here at the office. I may have hit “pay dirt.” Another “pack rat,” Bonnie Moretto has saved 4-H material for y-e-a-r-s and she (especially her husband) would like to get rid of it. I am going to meet with Bonnie and see what she might have that could prove useful to 4-H. It is going to be like going on a treasure hunt!

4-H NEWS
Newsletters by Email - We tried to send the 4-H Happenings out by email to help save on postage but found many were unhappy with that process so we went back to mailing hard copies out. It has come to our attention that there are some members who would prefer receiving the newsletters by email only (less paperwork in the mail). This is also a savings of postage for the university which in this time of budget crunch is always helpful. If you would like to receive your newsletters by email, please notify Joyce at jfortier@umext.maine.edu. Thank you for your help. Reminder - 4-H Happenings are also posted on our website: www.umaine.edu/umext/hancock/4-H/newslettertoc.htm

The theme this year is “Stitching with the Stars.” Family, friends and the public are invited to watch this delightful show. Please join us for a fun and entertaining evening. Reminder: All projects are due in the Extension Office by 4:00 pm on Friday, May 9th. Dress rehearsal will be held on May 15th at the Father Kenny Center.

Norma On The Lookout -
Recently
Justin, Mix
n’ Match, competed in the Modern Woodmen of America public speaking contest in
school and took 2nd place in his class. Then he went on to compete with other
winners from the entire school. He didn’t make the cut to go on to regional
competition, but his days of doing 4-H demonstrations were a big help. Here is
a picture of Justin receiving his award.
Congratulations Justin. I have watched many of your 4-H demonstrations and you
always seemed to have such a “knack” for doing them. I have heard you explain
things to others at Jamboree etc and again you have good speaking skills. The
skills you have learned are now showing even more results. Keep up the good
work.
Update on
Joe Fernandez,

accepted
Yale’s scholarship and will be majoring in Molecular Biochemistry and
Biophysics. Congratulations and our best wishes go with you.

vaccination for rabies as well as a current Coggins test done by a veterinarian.
EVH-1 and Equine Influenza are also
required.
Horse owners may, however, administer their own EVH-1 and Equine Influenza
inoculations and a sales receipt will be sufficient evidence for proof of
vaccination.” EVH-1 and Equine Influenza are considered effective for six
months. Plan the timing of your inoculations with your last event in mind.
If you have
any questions about this requirement, please contact your county Extension
office or you can call the State 4-H Office at 1-800-287-0274.

13. Clover Country: Songs from Famous 4-H Alumni
Lots of 4-H
members grow up to have famous important jobs – astronaut, congressman, and the
like. But some 4-H members grow up to be
country music stars!
National 4-H Council has partnered with EMI Music to create
"Clover Country: Songs
from Famous 4-H Alumni"—the
first-of-its-kind country music CD featuring famous 4-H alumni.
Clover Country
features Grammy-winning song writer, Hillary Lindsey's "The Clown," which
Lindsey exclusively recorded for the album as well as hit songs from country
music mega stars and 4-H alumni Sugarland, Dolly Parton, Reba McEntire, Martina
McBride, Faith Hill, Vince Gill, Johnny Cash, Glen Campbell, Luke Bryan and
Alabama. Best of all, every time someone from Maine buys a CD from the 4-H
mall, a portion of the sale goes to our Maine 4-H program.

4-H Happenings
An informational source for 4-H leaders in Hancock and Washington Counties
Greetings to all the
Hancock County 4-H volunteers~
For the past six months, I have been deeply immersed in learning more about
volunteer development. The experience was enriching and rewarding to say the
least.
During my time away, I had the opportunity to:
· visit
all 50 state 4-H web sites and explore what they offer for volunteers in terms
of web-based training. As a result, I have started to develop some
recommendations for the Maine 4H program in terms of how we might be able to
better meet the needs of our volunteers in the areas of orientation and
training.
· travel
to Spokane, WA where I participated in a week-long course on volunteer
management. During this week, I was able to work with colleagues from the
Nebraska 4-H program, Nancy MacDuff and Connie Pirtle, two top volunteerism
experts in the country, and two colleagues from Washington State University
Extension who have designed an on-line training course for both volunteer
managers and 4-H volunteers.
· work
with Barbara Stone, National Program Leader at 4-H Headquarters on a national
strategy around 4-H Volunteerism. I will be traveling to Indianapolis in
September to co-present this project.
· start
working on a year long project to earn my Certification in Volunteer
Administration.
The work that I did during the past six months solidified my feelings that our
4-H volunteers are really and truly the heart of our 4-H program. If in my role
as the Extension Educator I can provide the support to volunteers, whether that
be in terms of providing training, finding resources, interpreting policy or
research, making sure both our youth and volunteers are safe, and empowering
volunteers to develop and use their leadership skills to create activities,
events, experiences and opportunities for the youth, then I will have done my
job so that you can do yours, which is to make a positive impact on the youth in
our program.
Thank you to each and every one of you for the contributions you make to the 4-H
program. I am excited to be returning and I will look forward to reconnecting
with you in the coming weeks.
Warmly,
Jen
