Birdsacre!
Master Gardener Project Wins Award!

Search for Excellence is the recognition program of the best Master Gardener volunteer work throughout the United States and Canada. Search for Excellence has several categories in which Master Gardeners can demonstrate their outstanding contributions to their communities.  In 2006, Hancock County Master Gardeners won an Honorable Mention for their work with Special Audiences (Senior/Disabled) at Birdsacre Wildlife Sanctuary.  The award recognized the work Master Gardener Volunteers have done providing access to and education about the various types of habitats found throughout the 160 acre sanctuary.

Their Master Gardeners’ target audience was individuals who have difficulty navigating the trails in the sanctuary.  Their goals were to provide visitors with an area that was accessible, educational and enjoyable for all members of the community, and to educate visitors about the larger Birdsacre Sanctuary using a micro approach to the habitats in the sanctuary.  A 540’ boardwalk was laid out to enable visitors to enjoy several different habitats found on the more extensive Birdsacre trails:  a woodland meadow, ledges, evergreen forest, fern and moss gardens, brook and bog.  This boardwalk was built over three seasons. (1999-2001). Built to ADA standards, it is complete with railings, turn around areas, and seating where people may spend time enjoying the sights, smells, touching sensations and sounds within the preserve.  Master Gardener volunteers have also developed a plant inventory, a descriptive brochure, a photo collection and colored drawings of the native plants found in the Woodland Gardens. Additional outreach efforts have included providing guided tours of the woodland gardens and the creation of a web site about the Woodland Gardens.

Master Gardener Volunteers  have started work to bring the cottage plantings back to what they may have been in Cordelia Stanwood’s day.  The Master Gardeners will attempt to recreate Cordelia's Cottage garden.  Below are photos of the "Big Dig" as well as the Woodland Gardens.
