WASHINGTON COUNTY
MASTER GARDENERS

Watering Can

The Master Gardener Volunteer program in Washington County is young.  Trainings have been offered in Whitneyville (2002 and 2003) and Calais (2006).  Thirty four people have successfully completed the training to date.  Volunteer projects are still developing.  Some of them include:

  • conducting field trials that compare the effectiveness of three different weed control methods,
  • developing a website (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/downeastgardener/) for gardeners to exchange ideas and work through gardening problems,
  • helping individuals resolve their gardening problems and questions at the Cooperative Extension Office,
  • assisting with the construction of a garden labyrinth at U. Maine Machias, and teaching gardening to youth groups.
