2008 Master Gardener Class!

Maine's Master Gardener Program provides participants with at least 40 hours of in-depth training in the art and science of horticulture.  Trainees receive current, researched based information from Extension educators and industry experts.  In return, trained Master Gardeners volunteer their time and expertise in many ways for community programs and activities.

As part of a nationwide Cooperative Extension effort, Master Gardeners are recognized as well-trained practitioners who serve and beautify their communities.  They are linked to a professional network of support through county, state and national Cooperative Extension offices.

Who can become a Master Gardener?

Everyone who successfully completes the forty-plus hours of training, and volunteers at least 40 hours towards community gardening programs and activities can become a Master Gardener.  The participation fee this year will be $90 which covers the cost of the reference manual, handouts, and training site expenses.

When is the next Hancock County
Master Gardener session?

The 2008 class began January 25,2008 and ran for 14 weeks.   The focus for this class was Vegetable and Fruit Production.   If you are interested in next year's class, you can call for an application  1-800-287-1479 or 667-8212  or e-mail:  sbaez@umext.maine.edu .

What's Happening at Washington County?

The Master Gardener Volunteer program in Washington County is young.  Trainings have been offered in Whitneyville (2002 and 2003) and Calais (2006).  Thirty four people have successfully completed the training to date.  Volunteer projects are still developing.  Some of them include:

  • conducting field trials that compare the effectiveness of three different weed control methods,
  • helping individuals resolve their gardening problems and questions at the Cooperative Extension Office,
  • assisting with the construction of a garden labyrinth at  U. M. Machias, and teaching gardening to youth groups.
