at the Cooperative Extension Office
As Carolyn Hollenbeck,
a Master Gardener from Mount Desert says,
"It is truly a continuing educational experience".

Eight Master Gardener Volunteers
worked at the Hancock County Extension office this spring/summer, helping to
answer the many garden-related calls that came through the office each day. Some
will continue volunteering during the fall. Responding to gardeners' questions
is a wonderful way for Master Gardeners to continue their learning experience.
The University of Maine Cooperative Extension works with home gardeners and
commercial growers to find solutions to common plant disease and pest management
issues. The office receives questions by telephone, e-mail, and from walk-in
customers. This summer we received over 200 garden-related calls, which were
answered by our trained Master Gardener Volunteers! We also received samples of
diseased plants and insects, which were forwarded to our Pest Management office
for identification and recommendation of treatment.
In addition to the wealth of information available to Master Gardeners -- office
gardening manuals, Extension fact sheets, and online resources -- Extension
staff and Master Gardener Carolyn Hollenbeck have designed a protocol manual to
help each of our volunteers follow the same procedures when helping customers.
The protocol manual has proven to be very helpful in keeping our work consistent
and also serves as a quick reference when in doubt.
