Summer Camp Cook

Tanglewood 4-H Camp and Learning Center offers a residential summer camp program for approximately 120 people at its facility within Camden Hills State Park. Our mission is to teach Maine youth and adults to be effective and caring citizens of the earth through affordable environmental education and nature based experiences.  We also strive to develop lifelong skills and a sense of community spirit. The Summer Camp Cook is primarily responsible for preparing one meal per day.

Responsibilities:         

  • Prepare and cook healthy snacks/meals for the summer camp, using whole foods and fresh produce
  • Safely operate commercial cooking equipment: mixer, slicer, dishwasher and stoves
  • Supervise and assist camp staff, and sometimes campers, in safe food preparation, serving, and clean up
  • Model and train camp staff in safe and efficient ways of working in a commercial kitchen
  • Maintain a clean and sanitary kitchen facility
  • Work with summer camp chef in menu planning, food ordering, and preparing meals
  • Utilize produce from the camp's garden and local growers; develop a local base of food suppliers

Qualifications:

  • Prior experience cooking nutritious and wholesome foods for large groups
  • High safety and sanitation standards, ServSafe Certification (or ability to become certified)
  • Attention to detail
  • Flexible, enthusiastic team player
  • Interest in creating new meals to encourage healthy lifestyle choices for youth and adults

Preferred:  Prior experience working with youth; current First Aid and Basic Life Support; willingness to teach food education to program participants as needed

Compensation:  Negotiable, depending on additional tasks and housing requirments

Dates:  June 21 - August 16, 2008
