Focus Leader/Camp Counselor

As a Focus Leader/ Camp Counselor, you will have a great opportunity to improve your leadership skills by attending a week-long training and integrating your own experiences into daily camp practice.  You will also learn about Maine’s outdoors, make new friends, have fun, and make a difference in the lives of many young people through positive interactions.

 Responsibilities:

  • Live in a cabin with campers and, along with a co-counselor, create the necessary atmosphere for a positive camp experience. (staff/camper ratio = 1:4)
  • Coordinate, implement and evaluate a hands-on curriculum for youth in a week-long, 2 hour morning program “focus” using the learning objectives set forth by Tanglewood 4-H Camp.  Focus options include: watershed/marine ecology, forest ecology, creative arts, nature study, drama, group challenge, global perspectives, sustainable living and garden
  • Organize displays, projects, resource materials and supplies, which will serve to stimulate campers and staff.
  • Engage actively with campers during recreation duties and meal times
  • Plan and lead approximately six one-hour afternoon “elective” activities per week.
  • Help to plan and carry out other camp activities such as: special events, opening and closing ceremonies, evening programs, campfires, etc.
  • Role model healthy living, positive energy and clear communications
  • Participate in staff meetings and contribute to the ongoing improvement of the camp program.
  • Participate in community chores, meal service, and miscellaneous maintenance duties as required.

 Qualifications:

  • Alert, energetic, flexible, creative, enthusiastic team player, appreciate the natural world
  • Self-motivated, able to both lead and follow
  • Completed 1st year of college or equivalent experience
  • Previous camp or related experience working with youth
  • Ability to lead groups outdoors over various terrain
  • First Aid and Basic Life Support certification (CPR)

Preferred: Lifeguard certification

Compensation: $1700 base salary; room and board

Dates: June 22 to August 16, 2008
