Leadership Program Instructor

As a Leadership Program Instructor, learn about Maine's outdoors, explore the natural world, make new friends, have fun, and make a difference in the lives of many young people through positive interactions. You will also have a great opportunity to improve your leadership skills by attending a two-week training which includes both the trip-based and in-camp aspects of this program.

Responsibilities:

  • Co-lead a two-week or three-week, outdoor leadership program for teenagers (co-ed, 10/session) including 4-8 day overnight backpacking and canoeing trip each session.
  • Plan lessons/schedules and implement leadership curriculum
  • Teach a variety of skills: listening, communication, team-building, low-impact camping, conflict resolution, canoeing, backpacking, map and compass, general ecology, basic first aid
  • Role model healthy living, positive energy, diversity, and clear communication
  • Follow a demanding schedule and know own limits
  • Live-in and supervise cabin of up to 6 program participants of same gender
  • Facilitate group conflicts and strive to encourage problem solving and decision making
  • Carry out one-on-one and group program evaluations with campers
  • Evaluate program regularly with Program Coordinator and Leadership Coordinator
  • Participate in community chores, meal service, and miscellaneous maintenance duties as required

Qualifications:

  • Alert, energetic, flexible, creative, enthusiastic team player; appreciate the natural world
  • Enthusiasm for/and related experience, working with teenagers and teaching in the outdoors
  • Substantial camping/backpacking experience
  • Wilderness First Aid
  • Ability to lead groups outdoors over various terrain with gear
  • Canoeing skills
  • 21+ years of age or ability to pass Maine Trip Leader Certification Test
  • Driver's license

Preferred: Lifeguard certification, Wilderness First Responder, Small Craft Water Safety Certification

Compensation: $2250/summer, base salary; room and board

Dates: June 16 to August 16, 2008
