Public Trails
Tanglewood's 940+ acres of rolling forested hills, valleys, vernal pools and river and stream ecosystems are accessible by state park hiking and ski trails! Trails are maintained by a core of volunteers and camp staff for foot and cross-country ski traffic only. Trail maps can be found at the trailhead kiosk on Tanglewood Road and here on our web site (see below).

The Dale Mudge Memorial TREES Trail is a self-guided path through the Yankee Woodlot forest management demonstration site. It leads visitors on an exploration of forest ecology and sign posts explain how to manage a forest for the benefit of present and future generations.  This Trail is open to the public year round.  During the winter months, visitors must hike or ski from the camp’s main gate. Guided group tours of the Demonstration Forest are available upon request.

Hiking and Cross-Country Skiing
The Tanglewood trails may be reached by taking Route 1 north from Camden to Lincolnville Beach. About .8 of a mile past Lincolnville Beach, turn left onto Ducktrap Road and drive .7 of a mile to the first dirt road on right. This intersection is marked by a Tanglewood 4-H Camp sign. Proceed about .8 of a mile to the main gate and parking area. The camp is located one mile past the main gate. The road past the gate is not plowed in winter.

The Tanglewood 4-H Camp and Learning Center is operated by the University of Maine Cooperative Extension using land and facilities leased from the State of Maine. The land is part of Camden Hills State Park.

Ski at your own risk: The trails are NOT groomed or patrolled. For your own safety and the pleasure of all, observe the following rules:

  • No pets
  • Don't ski alone
  • Stay on marked trails
  • Pack out what you carry in

Please sign Guest Register in the box at the kiosk.
