UMaine’s Tanglewood Receives Public Recreation Award
News Articles

University of Maine Cooperative Extension's Tanglewood received the 2007 Public Recreation Award from the Camden-Rockport-Lincolnville Chamber of Commerce during their annual recognition dinner.

In a December 5, 2007 ceremony at the Samoset Resort, Chamber Secretary Scott Dickerson presented the award to Tanglewood’s Executive Director Brian Robinson, for the organization’s contributions to the community and their dedication to “leaving no child or adult left inside.”

“During the past 25 years, thousands of people have been taken into the great outdoors through its broad and strong environmental education program,” Dickerson said to the crowd, “and thousands more have skied, snowshoed, and hiked its more than nine miles of trails.”

Tanglewood recently upgraded and opened to the public an ADA-accessible trail at their Lincolnville camp, a section of interpretive trail that weaves through Camden Hills State Park. The trail is part of a large public trail system maintained on 940 acres for hiking and cross country skiing.

“Tanglewood is not a secret,” Robinson said. “Being recognized by the Chamber emphasizes our value to the community that sustains us as a resource that can be utilized by everyone statewide, whether it’s hiking, skiing or letting your children flourish through one of our many educational programs.”

Tanglewood was established in 1982 as a summer camp. It now comprises facilities in Lincolnville and Tenant’s Harbor that host more than 3,500 participants yearly through a variety of affordable environmental education programs for all ages. Programs include day camp, residential camp, discovery trips, leadership courses and school field trip programs. Tanglewood also offers Elderhostel, a lifelong learning program for adults over 55.
