Sustainable Homes News Articles | Living a More Sustainable Life | Sustainable Transportation 3rd in a Summer Series on "Living a More Sustainable Life" LINCOLNVILLE – Tanglewood 4-H Camp and Learning Center, a program of the University of Maine Cooperative Extension, announces a presentation on Sustainable Homes. The topic is the 3rd in the summer series Living Sustainably: Moving from “I can” to “I will” that examines ways that everyone can lead more sustainable lives. The first topic examined was sustainable food systems, and the second explored sustainable transportation. In addition to examining ecologically sound alternatives in daily living, the series will offer tips and tools for using personal values to navigate choices, identify barriers, and commit to living more sustainably. “Our homes provide many opportunities form making changes that support a more sustainable lifestyle,” says Cathy Elliott, UMaine Extension Wildlife Specialist. “From using more efficient light bulbs, to adding insulation, to installing photovoltaic systems, there is something for everyone. Small changes add up to make a significant difference on a larger scale.” Join us to hear about the experiences of our panelists. Kim and Bob Jacobs will be sharing what they have learned in going “off the grid” at their home in Brooks. Beedy and Dick Parker will talk about how they have made their traditional home in Camden more efficient and sustainable. Cathy Elliott will discuss her experiences in building a passive-solar, super-insulated home. This final program in the summer series will be held Tuesday, August 14, from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m., at the Hutchinson Center in Belfast. The summer series is part of new program, Earth Connection Volunteers: Creating Sustainable Communities that will launch this fall. The program is for individuals who want to learn about sustainability and share that knowledge with others while creating positive change in their own lives and in their community. Successful applicants to the Earth Connections Volunteers program will be provided with 40 hours of in-depth learning opportunities, resource sharing, and skill development. In return, volunteers will commit to conducting 30 hours of community outreach in collaboration with a community group, school, or conservation organization, or as an independent project of their own design.
