Camping is encouraged and entire families are welcome. Attention Parents and Guardians: 4-H also has an EDGE for YOU! By now we hope you have
read all about the upcoming 4-H EDGE Weekend as a step for our Maine 4-H members
considering college in their future. If not, briefly, on May 19 and 20, the EDGE
program will bring 11-15 year old 4-H youth to the University of Maine campus to
ENGAGE them with some of the great things you can study at the university
through hands-on workshops, encourage them to set a DIRECTION as they look
forward to future college experiences, and encourage them create GOALS for
future success. As parents or guardians, you might be thinking, “That’s great,
but who is going to help ME prepare for my child’s college experience?” And we
at 4-H have an answer for you! The Saturday May 19 session of the 4-H EDGE
weekend has a set of workshops for parents. As the youth go to their first
workshop, parents will have an opportunity to attend a session on helping your
child lay the groundwork for college admission as they move into and through
their high school years. Next, both parents and EDGE youth participants will be
treated to a BBQ lunch and then attend a workshop on getting scholarship ready
which will focus on how youth can position themselves to qualify for different
kinds of scholarship aid. As the youth go off for their second workshop,
parents/guardians will have an introduction to some of the options for financing
college.

Equine Herpes Virus Type 1 (EHV-1) On March 28, 2007, a horse housed in a private stable in Rome was diagnosed with the neurological form of. The three-year-old gelding had been euthanized on March 19, 2007, after exhibiting severe neurological signs over a 24-hour period. A 17-year-old horse at the same location had died of similar signs one day earlier. According to the State Veterinarian, Don Hoenig, this is the first reported case of the neurological form of EHV-1 in Maine. Additionally, an eight-year-old horse in Wales, previously housed for a short time at the stable in Rome, is currently under treatment for neurological signs consistent with EHV-1. The Department of Agriculture has placed both stables under quarantine. EHV-1 is primarily a respiratory pathogen in horses which can cause respiratory illness and abortion, but it can also cause a paralytic neurological disease. The virus is contagious and can be spread by direct contact with infected horses, respiratory secretions, and contact with contaminated objects, such as feed and water buckets and other barn tools and tack. Following initial exposure, EHV-1 has the ability to develop into an unapparent latent infection which can provide a reservoir of virus for continual transmission. This disease is not contagious to humans. Over the past two years, the Department of Agriculture, in consultation with equine veterinarians and representatives from the equine industry, including racetrack officials, has strongly recommended that racetracks, agricultural fairs, and equine training facilities in Maine require that horses entering their facilities be vaccinated for EHV-1 not more than six months or less than 14 days before entry. Department animal health officials are also encouraging all horse owners to consult with their practicing veterinarian on recommendations concerning vaccination and monitoring for the disease. For detailed information, please consult the US Department of Agriculture’s Web site at http://www.aphis.usda.gov/vs/nahss/equine/ehv/ Attention all Dairy 4-H Project Members There is an upcoming opportunity for all dairy members and mandatory items for youth trying out for the Dairy Team for Eastern States Exposition Below are some dates to keep in mind if you would like to expand your knowledge of your dairy project. Maine 4-H International Exchange Program needs your help Y.H. is a 12 year old boy from Kanagawa, Japan, who likes to play outside and is an avid soccer fan. This year he hopes to come to the United States and live with a Maine family. He can’t wait to catch bugs and dreams of seeing the stars at night. Y.H. is one of 19 Japanese youngsters who will be staying with local families as part of a two-way exchange program sponsored by 4-H. The exchangees will stay with their American host families from mid July to mid August.
This program is open to families in Maine with children close in age to the Japanese participants. Families without children in this age range will be considered as hosts for the adult chaperone from Japan. You don’t have to be involved with 4-H to host; you just need a willingness to share your home and your world. There is no need to know Japanese, the students have all studied English and are anxious to use it. “The program gives host families a chance to share their culture, friendship, and family life with an exchange student and at the same time learn about Japanese life,” said Jill Coffren of Jay, state coordinator for the program. “The homestays only last a month during summer vacation, but the effects a lifetime.” Host family applications and brochures about the program are available on-line at http://www.maine4h.umaine.edu/exchange/default.htm or by contacting your local County Extension Office or Jill Coffren at 207-645-3248. The 4-H International Exchange Program is one of the largest exchange programs involving North American and Japanese youth in the world. Since it began in 1972, some 39,000 students have stayed with families in 39 states, including Maine, and more than 6,300 American students have made reciprocal visits to Japan. 2007 Maine Agricultural Fair Schedule JULY 4-8 Houlton
