Pine Tree State 4-H Foundation Awards Grant
to York County 4-H Discovery Arts program!
The
Foundation awarded $1000 to support our new 4-H Arts program in
York County. 4-H Discovery Arts uses experiential arts to
teach youth about themselves, nature, their communities, and the
world.
Research has
shown that the arts can help youth develop valuable life skills
including self-esteem, self-expression, cooperation, and
critical thinking.
Developed by
Jon Prichard, this program will help youth “discover the art of
life”. The program is being piloted in York County for
replication nationally.
The “Art
Saturday” program that concludes May 7 was the first 4-H
Discovery Arts program.
Art in Nature:
discover the art of nature!
You should
have received a brochure announcing our new Art in Nature
program. We’re excited about this program and hopeful that it
will build on the positive energy and success of Art Saturday!
Classes are
Mon-Fri, July 18-22, 9 am – 2 pm. The workshop is limited to 14
children, ages 9-17. The registration fee is $50, which
includes all supplies, snacks and healthy lunches.
All programs
will take place at the Extension office in Sanford and will use
the beautiful gardens and outdoors as our “studio” for the
week. Community artist Laura Jaquays will provide creative,
educational and fun arts. These are great projects “just for
fun”, or for public display such as Acton Fair.

Clarifying 4-H Raffle Ticket Sales
We have
received word from the State that we must clarify the laws
governing raffle tickets and 4-H members and volunteers.
According to Maine State Police, Division of Gaming and Weapons,
adults and youth 16 and older can sell tickets and purchase
tickets.
Youth under
the age of 16 cannot sell or buy raffle tickets in Maine. The
exception to this is a certified school. A certified (licensed
school) can carry out a raffle where student sell tickets,
however, 4-H does not fall under this exception. The Inspector
from the State Police was clear to say that 4-H doesn't qualify
for the exception.
Leaders, Parents and 4-H Members:
Important Information about Animal Approval Forms for 2005
New for this
year all copies of animal approval forms will need to be
embossed with the stamp we have at the county office. Leaders,
I know many of you like to have copies of the animal approval
forms for the youth in your club and that is fine but please let
us know that in the office and we will send you the embossed
copies.
Please know
that a photocopy without the emblem will no longer work
and that the fairs will be looking for the embossed emblem, and
the embossed emblem is protected by copyright. Fair officials
will be receiving notification about the embossed forms shortly
but wanted to remind you about this new change for 2005. If you
have questions about this please contact Donna Flint at the York
County Extension office.
