Southern Maine 4-H Horse Camp

The
third annual Southern Maine 4-H Horse Camp is held annually at Ossipee
Valley Fairgrounds.
The 2006 Horse Camp was held July 31 - August 3, with 30 youth
and 28 horses attending, along with some incredible volunteers
who made it all happen.
Southern
Maine 4-H Horse Camp is conducted by competent, experienced
staff, volunteers, and the staff of the University of Maine
Cooperative Extension (York County)
For the
camper, Horse Camp is experienced on several levels.
It's about
horses
- Each camper takes complete care of her/his horse...feeding,
grooming, barn chores, tack, and exercise. Campers have ring and
lecture instruction, judging, along with planned fun activities.
Horses are stabled in box stalls, while their companion sleeps
assigned "dormitories."
It's
about life skills
- On a deeper level, horse camp is about life skills.
Throughout the year 4-H youth have been learning valuable skills
that will serve them in life. As they have owned or leased
their horses, cared for their horses, worked in a 4-H club
setting, learned and practiced riding skills, demonstrated
knowledge about horses, their "learning by doing", has deepened
such life skills as:
-
Goal setting
-
Managing
-
Wise use of resources
