Maine Garden Day Celebrates 12 Years!

There is nothing like the experience of being together with 500+ enthusiastic gardeners sharing information in early spring.

University of Maine Cooperative Extension’s “Maine Garden Day” will celebrate celebrated its 12th Annual event on Saturday, April 16, 2005 at the Central Maine Community College in Auburn.  Since it’s inception Maine Garden Day has become one of Maine’s premiere gardening educational events. In eleven years we estimate over 5,500 people have participated in over 320 workshops. Workshop topics have ranged from the “basics of soil building” and “home composting”, to the exotics such as making “hypertufa pots” and the “how to of topiary”.

Much of Maine Garden Day's success has been due to a slate of outstanding speakers.  Here is a short list of some of the people who have spoken at most, if not all of the 11 years.  Our thanks go out to them and all the other great speakers who have been a part of the event.

  • Jim McConnon.  His popular Growing A Garden Business has been the first step for hundreds of people interested in starting a horticultural business.

  • David Handley.  Has tackled a different small fruit or vegetable every year, sometime two in one year!

  • Lois Stack.  Has been gracious enough to be willing to speak on a wide variety of topics ranging from Botany for Gardeners to Landscape Design with an Italian Flair.

  • Eric Sideman, Crop Production Specialist, MOFGA.  A terrific representative for MOFGA who makes tough subjects such as soil science and crop rotation understandable to all.

  • Clay Kirby and Bruce Watt.  These two can always be counted on to deliver excellent information on environmentally friendly methods of insect and disease control.

  • Mike Murphy, Wake-Robin Nursery.  His fascination with plants is evident in his talks which have ranged from Butterfly Gardening to Woodland Wildflowers.
