Canoeing at Vaughn Island Environmental Camp.SPLASH!  From the minute you set foot on Vaughn Island 'til the moment you leave, you're part of an exciting learning adventure!  Our unique program offers three and four day tenting experiences where youth discover -- through their own natural curiosity and imagination -- the sights, sounds, smell and feel of Maine's rocky coast.

Designed with the whole child in mind, Vaughn Island 4-H Camp brings lasting memories.  Living, working and playing together, campers make new friends and develop a sense of trust and responsibility for the whole group.  An emphasis is placed on no-trace camping skills, cooperation, discovery of the island's plant and animal life, coastal heritage, and marine ecology.

For 35 years, Vaughn Island 4-H Camp has been helping youth develop an appreciation of the marine environment, recognizing that they themselves are part of Earth's interconnected web of life.

JUST OFF THE COAST OF KENNEBUNKPORT...
Vaughn Island is a 40-acre stretch of beaches, rocky shore, salt marsh, and oak/pine forest owned and cared for by the Kennebunkport Conservation Trust.  Rich tide pools come alive with sea stars, urchins, mussels and an occasional lobster or seal pup.  As one of fourteen islands surrounding Cape Porpoise harbor, it is accessible by foot during low tides and by canoe otherwise.

Finding a baby lobster on the rocks. Each camping session includes just eighteen campers led by a well-qualified trained staff of two Environmental Educators and two Teen Leaders. Vaughn Island 4-H Camp is licensed by the State of Maine.  All camping equipment and food is provided by the University of Maine Cooperative Extension in York County.

Programs are open to all York County youth age 9-17 whether enrolled in 4-H or not.  Youth from outside of the County may also attend.  All sessions are filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

TEEN LEADERS
The teen leader session is a 4-day Leadership training workshop for teens who are invited back to serve as volunteer camp counselors in one or more camper sessions.

* Four-day programs are specially designed to go beyond an awareness of the natural environment.  Canoe trips through Cape Porpoise harbor, visits to a U.S. Coast Guard Lighthouse, and clamming give campers a look at human interactions with the natural environment.  Through special projects, campers will be challenged to consider the impact of growth and development of Maine's natural resources and find creative ways to lead lives more in harmony with the sustainable use of the world's natural resource

READY TO REGISTER?
Complete the registration forms (Registration, Medical and Photo release) and return with a check or money order made out in full to the York County Extension Association no later than June 15.  Space is limited, so register early!
