Department of English

Graduate Program

Graduate Applicants:

Students admitted to graduate study in the Department of English take courses leading to the Master of Arts in English. In what is normally a thirty-hour program, all students take at least fifteen hours in literature. The Department offers four concentration areas as outlined below:

* Concentration in Traditional Literary Study
Students in this concentration take an additional 15 hours of literature coursework.

* Concentration in Poetry and Poetics
Students pursue a focused study of poetry and poetics as part of their overall preparation in British and American literature.

* Concentration in Creative Writing
Students take an equal number of courses in literature and in writing.

* Concentration in Women's Studies
Students pursue an interest in women's literature as a substantial part of their general preparation in British and American literature. This is an interdisciplinary concentration wherein students will work with women's studies faculty from other departments within the university.

* Concentration in Composition
Students take additional courses exploring current theories about writing, the teaching of writing, and the contexts of writing - including linguistics, critical theory, and discourse analysis.

Applicants Seeking Degrees Off-Campus:

There are a number of courses offered each summer which allow students with limited access to the UMaine campus during the regular school year the chance to complete a degree over the course of several summers.

Additionally, the Continuing Education Division offers Distance Education classes each semester available through compressed video or ITV. These courses allow students living anywhere in Maine the opportunity to take courses from UMaine faculty.
