Dr. Bernard Lown '42, 1985 Nobel Peace
Prize Winner: "Finally--at last finally, it's really finally--I've
learned there can be no healthy United States in a sick world. There
cannot be a secure United States in a war-torn world. No affluent United
States is possible in a poor world. I am persuaded we shall not have a
more livable world unless we make it a more just world.
And now, for the commerical. I've just finished writing this book; it's
going to be published in July. It's available now on Amazon--that's the
commercial.
"The greatness of these Cassandra-like ruminations does not fill me with
pessimism. Two substantial lessons of my life are a constant source of
optimism. First derives from the great bounty that science can unleash
to provide abundance for every living soul on Earth. Second derives from
the awesome power of people, when educated, fully informed of what is at
stake, acting in concert, acting together, acting out of sympathy for
one another. A better world is indeed possible, and I have faith that
young people will make it happen. So I urge you not to hesitate to
respond to the promptings of your conscience, to let your imagination
roam, to become engaged in making the world fit for human beings. Only
those who see the invisible can do the impossible. May you think
clearly, act decisively, and care tenderly, for without knowledge there
is no future, and without caring, there is no hope. Thank you."
