Admission

UMaine graduatesAdmission to UMaine is selective. Apply as early as possible. We encourage you to submit your application electronically at www.go.umaine.edu or www.commonapp.org.

With your application we require:

  • an official high school transcript including first set of senior grades
  • official SAT or ACT scores (waived for transfers with over 12 completed credits)
  • official college transcripts
  • an essay
  • school recommendation (first-year applicants only)
  • application fee of $40.

Early Action Deadline

Early Action Deadline is December 15 for a decision by the end of January. Early action candidates will be given priority for merit scholarships that are awarded by the Admission Office. When senior grades are not available by December 15, they may be waived or the application may be moved to rolling admission.

Rolling admission

Rolling admission for fall '08 starts in February for applications completed after December 15 and for Early Action applications that are referred to the regular process.

High School Preparation

College preparatory coursework should include: four units of English, three to four units of mathematics (at least algebra I, II, and geometry and an advanced mathematics course for some majors), two to three units of a lab science (check for specific requirements), two units of foreign language, and two to three units of social studies. Computer science and fine arts units are strongly recommended. Honors, Advanced Placement and college-level courses are encouraged when appropriate. Transfer applicants may use completed college coursework to replace missing required high school courses.

Advanced Placement Credit

Advanced Placement credit is available for more than 40 UMaine courses. Most require a score of three or higher.

International Applicants

The Office of International Programs reviews international applications and provides support services for international students. Please see the admission and financial documentation requirements and submit the International Admission Application found online
(http://www.umaine.edu/international/). A score of 530 on the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is required if English is not your first language. Applications should be submitted by March 1 for the fall; November 1 for the spring.
