Admission, continued.

Paying for a UMaine Education

UMaine makes a conscious effort to keep costs at a reasonable level. It is committed to providing financial assistance to qualified students through a combination of scholarships, grants, student employment and loans. All applicants are encouraged to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Financial Aid (FAFSA). The online version is preferred. The 2007–08 FAFSA should be completed as soon after January 1, 2008 as possible and before February 15 to ensure that the information is received by the Federal Student Aid Processing Center before March 1. Students whose FAFSA information is received at the Federal Processing Center later than March 1 will be given awards on a funds-available basis, which may negatively affect the amount of their award. Students applying for spring 2008 should complete the 2007–08 FAFSA form. UMaine's code is 002053.

Research at UMaineScholarships

UMaine has scholarship programs designed to encourage academically talented and diverse students to attend the university.

The Office of Admission awards approximately $1 million in merit scholarships for new  students, based on a combination of the rigor of their high school program, their high school performance and standardized test scores (or cumulative grade point average for transfer students). All first-time students accepted during the Early Action admission process will be given priority consideration for merit scholarships awarded by the admission office. Students accepted during the regular rolling admission process will be considered on a funds-available basis. Scholarship amounts vary from $1,000 to full tuition.

Some colleges and academic departments at UMaine have their own scholarship programs. These may require a special application, an audition or a portfolio review.

Restricted scholarships are the gifts of alumni and friends of the university and often have specific criteria relating to students from a town or high school, in a specific major or associated with a family or a company. They may be either need or merit based, or both.
