Lindsey Hugstaad-Vaa, student

"I came on campus with my mom and thought it was a beautiful place. We went to Acadia National Park and I really loved it. The people at UMaine are amazing. They're just very nice and very considerate. So many people here really want you to get the best experience out of UMaine."

Explorations... discover the major for you.

A unique program for students who are not ready to select an academic major. Students take a first-year seminar taught by an academic adviser, enabling them to make an informed choice about a major or potential career. Explorations can help students choose the right major while exploring their abilities, interests and goals.

Transitions... your path to a successful college experience.

Transitions is an intensive program offering a select group of students a focused collegiate experience. Transitions students take a maximum of 10 credits the first semester and meet regularly with an adviser during the first two semesters. Students must meet a minimum GPA of 2.0 at the end of the first year to successfully complete their program and transfer to a major in one of the five colleges.

Pre-professional Programs

Students at the library, studyingHealth Professions

Students regularly participate in research laboratory studies with faculty members. UMaine also places qualified undergraduates with physicians and other professionals at the Eastern Maine Medical Center to job shadow and learn firsthand about the challenges of a medical career. The university's health professions specialist provides support services to students who are planning to attend medical school or other professional schools. Graduating health professions students have access to the Gilbert Loan Program, which provides low-interest loans to UMaine graduates who enroll in medical, dental or veterinary schools.

Pre-Law

A special adviser works with students and the academic advisers from the student's major program and provides counsel during the law school admission process.
