To commemorate the World Series victory by the Florida Marlins (now rapidly receding into dim memory), Alan Cobo-Lewis is proud to present...

The Florida Marlins Fish Page

Memories (not mine)

The Marlins’ defeat of the Cleveland Indians last year marked 49 years since Cleveland last won the World Series. Their last victory was in 1948, when my father was a student at Case Institute of Technology (now Case Western Reserve University) in Cleveland. He chauffered the visiting team (the Boston Braves!) to one of the games, and thereby got in for free. As far as he can recall (he’s not much of a baseball fan), the game he saw was not the one in which the great Satchel Paige pitched. (This was the year after Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier. Satch, near the end of his career, retired two batters in relief in Game 5, marking his only appearance in the World Series.)

Satchel also had a Marlin connection. After his brief stint in the majors, Satchel entered the minors, where he pitched for the Miami Marlins (the minor-league team after whom the Florida Marlins were named). [Thanks to the proprietor of Art Etcetera, Orono, ME, for this info.]

Fishing for Anagrams

Other fish are hidden in the name “Florida Marlins”. The team name is an anagram of “Salmon Friar Lid”. Tuck that in your Hood. And while you’re at it, try stealing from H. Wayne Huizenga and giving to the poor. If you can’t bring yourself to steal any landlubbing dollars, then try another anagram of the team’s name: “Admiral’s Florin”.
