How to Graduate

Graduating with an M.S. in Ecology and Environmental Science, Water Resources Concentration

  1. Fill out your Program of Study form;
Check that you have fulfilled the following requirements:
         2 credits of seminar
9 credits in a subject area
30 credits total, at least 6 of which are thesis
Grad level stats course, or stats proficiency
Get it signed by your committee. Send it to the Graduate School (you will receive confirmation that they receive it). Don't worry if these aren't your final class choices - there is a Change in Program of Study form (pdf document) that you submit later - everybody changes lots of times!

  2. Start your literature review, fieldwork, labwork, etc.

  3. In the second semester of your first year, thesis proposal (the more you do now, the less later!) and presentation should be done. The content, length, etc. are up to your committee

  4. Get a check list for graduate degrees from the Graduate school. This has actual deadlines to use for the rest of your program.

  5. Submit an Application for Degree form the February prior to expected May graduation. Usually due in October for December graduation, and June for August graduation. Check with the Graduate School (Dottie is the contact - Phone # 1-3217.) It doesn't matter if you actually graduate - if you think you might graduate, submit the form, and keep submitting every semester you think you might be done. Forms are available in the Graduate School and in the Office of Student Records or by Fax-to-Fax by dialing (207) 581-1285 and following the prompts.

  6. Send copies of your thesis draft around to your committee, usually after your primary advisor is happy with it. The earlier the better.

  7. Schedule your defense (at least two weeks prior to defense) and notify (you or your advisor) the department chair and other interested parties of the date, time, place. Tell the other grad students so they can make you cookies!

  8. Submit a tentative thesis (check with Graduate School for specifics) and a Tentative Thesis Acceptance form (pdf document) 24 hours before the defense, and at least 2 weeks prior to commencement (check dates with the Graduate School). This is your thesis, the final version, all correctly formatted, which the Graduate School will check for formatting. You will probably have to revise this after your defense to fully satisfy your committee and to make any formatting changes.

  9. Defense! Followed by a lovely session of grilling by the committee.

  10. Submit final thesis and Final Thesis Acceptance form (usually 8 days before commencement, check with Graduate School) signed by your committee.

  11. Graduate School will give you information on electronic thesis submission (does not replace paper copy submission, but makes your thesis more available on the web/through the library) when you get your tentative copy back.

  12. Completion of Requirements form for EES requirements and a second Completion of Requirements form for the Water Resources Concentration need to be submitted by your advisor when you are finishing up.

  13. Double and triple check with the grad school on completed requirements.

  14. Turn in your library books and pay your parking tickets! Any unpaid bills could keep you from getting your diploma.
