The Good Stuff

  • Most of the forms you'll need can be downloaded from the Graduate School website.

  • Lots of university information, like a campus map and links to department and program pages can be found on the University website.

  • The University will bill you for tuition in August-even though it should be waived. Don't worry, they do this as a matter of course. Just take your bill in to the Bursar's Office in Alumni Hall, tell them that you are an RA (Research Assistant), and they will take care of it. They don't process our appointment forms until October.

  • Get a Parking Pass as soon as possible; they will ticket with a vengeance. As an RA, you are entitled to a blue Faculty/Staff pass (you will need to show your Appointment Form to get it). For office location and parking fee, go to www.umaine.edu/parking

  • Get a MaineCard I.D. as soon as possible from the Student Service Center, located in Memorial Union. You can also deposit funds on the MaineCard to be used at dining facilities on campus.

  • Get your e-mail set up as soon as possible. The University uses FirstClass, and because you pay a technology fee, you get an account and free dial-up access from home. To get an account, go to the Help Center in the basement of Shibles Hall.

  • If you plan to do any traveling for field work, conferences, etc., you should register with the Motor Pool so that you are authorized to drive University vehicles. You also need to sign a travel form in the Mitchell Center office.

  • The Fogler Library has a pretty good website and also provides access to some journals online. There are also links to the other UMaine libraries across the state, the Bangor Public Library, etc. The library is also a Government Document Repository.

  • Check with your advisor about references for your thesis - some advisors let you use their departmental copy account, and you can actually have library staff retrieve journal articles for a charge. Your advisor/department has to give you an account number to use.

  • You can request an item or an interlibrary loan online at the Fogler Library website. You may need an account number for this.

  • If you need a piece of field equipment, try Central Supply on campus. They have lots of different stuff, including duct tape, bug spray, lab tubing, etc. Call them or check out a list of available items at: http://www.umaine.edu/csupply/

  • All campus numbers are 581- numbers; for example, 581-3244 (Mitchell Center main number). However, when you are calling an on-campus number from anywhere on campus, you only need to dial 1 and the extension (i.e. 1-3244). For off-campus numbers, dial an 8 and then the number. Long distance numbers require an authorization code (posted in the Graduate Office). Phone code for Maine is 207.

  • The Association of Graduate Students (AGS) is your friend. They fund graduate clubs and organizations, have a great travel grant program, a Graduate Research Expo, a Laptop Loan program, and many socials (free beer!). Your representative must attend meetings for you to get funding. Read the newsletters and check the AGS folder on FirstClass.

  • The BAT bus system, serving the greater Bangor area, is free when you show your Maine Card. To check stop times and routes, go to: http://www.bgrme.org/cs_publictransit.php

  • Ask your advisor or a Mitchell Center staff person about getting keys to the building, a photocopy code and phone code, if necessary.

  • Make yourself aware of the printing and media services available on campus. The Media Lab in Fogler Library has scanners, a large format poster printer, photo printers, etc. University Printing Services in the Keyo Public Affairs Building also offers lots of printing (especially bulk) and binding services.

  • Be aware that there are 2 Corbett Halls on campus! Double check if you have to go to a Corbett Hall for any reason.
