About the Writing Center
What is the Writing Center?
The Writing Center is a free resource on campus
available for faculty, staff, and all students from all majors,
where individual attention is given to every kind of writing.
The Writing Center provides each client with up to an hour of
individual feedback, discussion, and suggestions for improving
his or her writing.
The
tutors at the Writing Center have been trained to help you meet
the writing demands of professors at the Universty of Maine, and
the just-as-strict demands of writing in the Twenty First Century.
So please, come and use this service in 402 Neville Hall;
people who visit the the Writing Center almost always find it
helpful! Ask your friends and your professors about us, or drop
by and see for yourself.
Visit the Writing Center with any kind
of Writing: class papers, research projects, theses,
grant applications, resumes, stories, or even a few ideas written
down on paper.
Are there any other services?
- Besides tutoring the Writing Center offers:
- An ESL (English as a Second Language) specialist
- Numerous handbooks, dictionaries, and style
manuals
- Quick Writing Advice
- Computers (Mac and PC) with internet access,
word processing and printing
- Comfortable chairs and tables in a relaxed
sunny environment
How do I use the Writing Center?
You can either call (581-3828) to make an appointment
or you can walk in and hope that a tutor is available. It is usually
best to call at least one day in advance because the schedule
fills up fast. The Writing Center is open 9 - 4 Monday
through Friday. You can request specific tutors and will
be placed with them if they are available.
What should I bring with me?
The most important thing to bring is the assignment
(if you have one) and any writing you have done so far on the
assignment. Here is a helpful list of things to consider bringing:
- The assignment (class notes, handouts,
syllabus, etc)
- The writing
- A copy of the writing (not necessary,
but sometimes helpful for you and the tutor to each have a copy
to look at during the session)
- Computer disks, books, and research materials
- Cookies for the tutors (writing and reading
makes them hungry.)
