Maryann Hartman Awards

Spring 1990 Award Winners
Honoring three Maine women

Mildred "Brownie" Schrumpf

"Brownie" Schrumpf, the former Mildred Brown of Orono, was the first name in cooking for readers for the Bangor Daily News for over 40 years. Brownie graduated from the University of Maine in 1925 with a B.S. degree in home economics. In 1932 she married William E. Schrumpf who became her willing taste-tester until his death in 1976. Her years of dedicated service in the fields of home economics include lecturing, teaching, directing 4-H, promoting Maine products, and, of course, contributing a weekly food column to the Bangor Daily News. She has been an active participant at the alumni office at the University of Maine, serving from 1962 until her retirement in 1969. She still maintains her ties with that office, serving as a volunteer. "Volunteer" is not just a word, but a way of life with Brownie. Her associations include not only the Alumni Association, but working for the Orono Health Association and her local church volunteer group; she was a regular visitor to the local nursing homes, a fixture at YWCA functions and often served as chauffeur to the neighbors. Brownie's years of service have not gone unrecognized. Her many awards and honors include a Black Bear award (1957); Maine Department of Agriculture Award (1970): UM General Alumni Association Award (1974); and the Annual Achievement Citation Award of the American Association of University Women (1989). Brownie Schrumpf passed away in 2001 at the age of 98.

Olympia J. Snowe

Olympia J. Snowe was elected to the United States Senate on November 8, 1994 representing the State of Maine. Senator Snowe, a Republican, is known nationally for her work on budget deficit reduction, fiscal issues, health care, women's issues and foreign affairs. In the 105th Congress, she was a member of the Senate Armed Service Committee; the Senate Budget Committee; the Senate Committee on Small Business; and the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, where she chaired the subcommittee on Fisheries and Oceans. Before her election to the Senate, Senator Snowe represented Maine's Second Congressional District for eight terms in the U.S. House of Representatives. When she was elected to the Congress in 1978 at the age of 31, Senator Snowe was the youngest Republican woman and the first Greek-American woman elected to the Congress. As a member of the House of Representatives, Senator Snowe earned respect for her leadership as co-chair of the Congressional Caucus for Women's Issues. Before her election to Congress, Ms. Snowe served in both the Maine House of Representatives and the Maine Senate. Ms. Snowe graduated from St. Basil's Academy in Garrison, New York in 1962, and completed her secondary education at Edward Little High School in Auburn. She graduated with a degree in political science from the University of Maine at Orono in 1969. Senator Snowe is married to former Maine Governor John R. McKernan Jr. and resides in Falmouth, Maine. Ms. Snowe is a member of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church of Lewiston-Auburn, and has been an active member in a number of civic and community organizations

Mabel Sine Wadsworth

Born in 1910 in Rochester, New York, Mabel Sine Wadsworth earned her RN degree at the University of Rochester, where she heard of Margaret Sanger's pioneer work in birth control and developed her own interest in helping women gain control over their reproductive lives. Mabel moved to Bangor in 1946 and joined the Maternal Health League. Her community involvement in volunteer organizations included the League of Women Voters and the Hospital Auxiliary. She helped the Abnaki Council of Girl Scouts, served as the President of the Bangor Counseling Center's Board of Directors, and was active in the development of the Women's Resource Center. In the 1960's, Mabel organized the first Family Planning Program in Maine and was the first Director of Family Planning in the central Maine area. In the early 1970's, Mabel was instrumental in the passage of legislation giving teenagers the right to confidential contraceptive services. Mabel has been a member of the Board of Director of Legal Services for the Elderly, and has raised funds for the Bangor Symphony, Spruce Run, and the United Way. An original founder of the Mabel Wadsworth Women's Health Center, she inspired and shared that organization's vision of a feminist health center empowering all women to take control of their lives. Mabel Wadsworth passed away in 2006 at the age of 95.
