Maryann Hartman Awards

1997 Award Winners
Honoring three Maine women

Constance Hunting

Hunting, Professor Emerita of English at the University of Maine, fostered writing aspirations in several generations of Maine women. Editor, teacher, publisher and essayist, she was the author of thirteen books of poetry as well as numerous scholarly publications and received national attention of her work. She was the founder and editor of the Puckerbrush Press and The Puckerbrush Review. In 1992 she received Westbrook College's Deborah Morton Award for Literary and Cultural Contributions to Maine, and had served as the Chair of the National Poetry Foundation since 1989. Constance Hunting passed away in 2006.

Madeline Giguere

Giguere has been referred to as "la marraine des francos-americains" for her continuing work in identifying and celebrating the Franco-American presence in Maine. She is known especially for her demographic studies of Franco-Americans in New England. She served on the Governor's Council on the Status of Women and the Maine State Advisory Committee to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights. A retired professor of sociology from the University of Maine, she is currently the Director of Franco-American Heritage Collection at the Lewiston/Auburn College, and also serves on the Commission to Study the Development of Maine's Franco-American Resources.

Dale McCormick

McCormick has a long history of empowering women. As the founder of Women Unlimited, a technical training institute for women, she has enabled women to enter previously male-dominated fields and to increase their earning capacity. She has also been a pioneer of gay and lesbian civil rights as founder of the Maine Gay/Lesbian Political Alliance. McCormick has written two books, Against the Grain: A Carpentry Manual for Women and Housemending: Home Repair for the Rest of Us. After serving as a state senator, McCormick became the first woman to be elected to the office of Maine State Treasurer, the position she currently holds.
