"I
myself have never been able to find out precisely
what feminism is: I only know that people call
me a feminist whenever I express sentiments that
differentiate me from a doormat."

Be
sure to visit the Women's Studies Library in 101 Fernald Hall.
Our library includes over 2,500 volumes,
audiocassettes, and videos, as well as a number of periodicals, many of which are not available
at Fogler Library. Most materials may be signed out on loan
or photocopied here.
We also have a small
collection of audio materials.
While our collection
is growing, our library is still manageably sized and inviting,
enabling both serious research and comfortable browsing.
We are in the process
of putting our collection on URSUS, but our old-fashioned
card catalogue will continue to tell you what we have.
Our diverse video
collection covers many subjects pertaining to women and women's
issues and includes commercially made movies, documentaries,
and interviews. We also have videos of our annual Mary Ann
Hartman Awards ceremonies, Women's History Celebration speakers,
and many of our Women in the Curriculum lunch sessions.
Recent grants, including
three from the Bird and Bird Instructional Improvement Fund
and one from the Lannon Literary Foundation, have enabled
us to add to our growing collection with titles concerning women of color and global feminism, as well as interviews and readings
by notable American women authors.
All of our videos
can be viewed here (if the conference room is available)
or checked out for two or three days.
We also encourage
suggestions for future acquisitions.

The
Women's Studies Library also contains many journals, periodicals, and magazines on feminism and women's issues that
are of interest to both Women's Studies scholars and to the
general reader. Some are historical feminist publications
that are no longer in print, while others are brand new publications
to which we have recently subscribed. Some of the journals
are not found in Fogler Library or anywhere else on campus.
The Women's Studies Library vertical files are
a unique collection of resources. They contain articles,
pamphlets, newsletters, and information sheets on a variety
of women's issues. Topics range from abortion rights to ecofeminism
to self defense. The files also house literature distributed
by local and national organizations such as NARAL, Spruce
Run, The Mabel Wadsworth Women's Health Center, the Maine
Women's Fund, and the Women's Business Development Corporation.
There is an extensive collection of materials from international
women's groups and organizations covering the issues facing
women on a global scale.
