Division of student life

Who we are

The Division of Student Life is dedicated to helping students adjust to college life, get the most out of their college experience, and partner to make our university community a better place for all its members to live, study and work. We all have a part in determining whether each of us can achieve personal and academic success. Your participation in the remarkably broad range of programs and activities Student Life offers can make a huge difference in the lives of the general student community. UMaine is justifiably proud of the role students play in the life of the institution, and we hope you will become an active part of this Black Bear tradition.

We in Student Life are here to support your journey and provide guidance, especially during challenging times. You’ll have opportunities to connect with the Dean of Students and the professional staff in the Dean of Students Office, a team committed to student advocacy, upholding the Student Code of Conduct, and helping you navigate university policies, issues, or conflicts. This dedicated group serves as a central resource for ensuring your well-being, resolving community issues, and making certain that your voice is heard within the administration. They are partners in your success, offering a confidential, caring place to turn when you need assistance or simply want to explore ways to become a more engaged leader on campus.

Student advocacy

Student life is here to help all students advocate for themselves and succeed in their goals by addressing a wide range of academic, personal, and social challenges. We help you understand the issues you face, such as dealing with living by yourself for the first time, academic struggles, feeling homesick, and discussing future career plans. We provide support for overcoming problems through appropriate referrals for personal issues (like coping with personal or family issues) and social challenges (like exploring relationship issues). Academically, we can assist with test stress, course withdrawals, and communicating your concerns by helping critique letters of appeal, explaining personal problems to faculty, and discussing university policies with parents. We also work to eliminate red tape, expedite the use of student resources (disabilities, counseling, tutoring), and mediate policy issues related to parking, withdrawals, and conduct violations.

We are dedicated to examining issues and problem-solving with you, discussing educational options, balancing school and work, and clarifying the seriousness of disciplinary sanctions. Our goal is to help you develop comprehensive strategies for success by promoting a well-rounded education, encouraging the use of valuable resources like The Tutor Program and the Writing Center, and helping you learn effective time management techniques.
